The Lawn and Para Lawn Bowls Events will take place at Victoria Park, Leamington Spa from

Friday 29th July until Saturday 6th August.

A warm sunny day accompanied by a cooling, but strong breeze, was the setting on Sunday for our Lady Captain's Day. The day began with a "Spider" which was won by Coleen Money and  was followed by a Triples Game of twelve ends.  However, not all the ends were standard bowls practice and for two ends competitors were required to bowl with their non - dominant hand. The "jack"  was removed from the rink, after it's position being marked, and players had to bowl to a chalk mark, and finally, the ladies had to play with their opposite number's woods.  While this was all strictly unorthodox, it made for a lot of frivolity and fun, which may partly have been because of the Pimms being sipped during the course of the game.

The match was followed by a meal, prepared by the men and was overseen by Gill Grindey and Margaret Gorman, our stalwart ladies who have organised and catered for all the events throughout the season.  Margaret and Gill were thanked and presented with gifts by Sue Coates our Lady Captain, in appreciation for all their hardwork as well as Muriel Goodridge for her support on many occasions, during the season.

Janet Haynes, our Lady Vice - Captain was also presented with a gift for all her help and support throughout the year and we all wish her well for next year when she will take over as the new Lady Captain.

The men waited on the ladies for the course of the meal, which was also appreciated. Many thanks to the team of Bob Prince, who also made the Pimms, Mike Walsh, Neil Fletcher, Stewart McCabe, Alistair Ford, Pete Wilkinson and Peter Coates.

Sue was presented with a gift on behalf of all the ladies in appreciation for her work as Lady Captain and Gwen, our Ladies' Secretary,  was also presented with a gift  for all her hardwork and organisation in the first year of her membership. We thank you both very much.

The day included a raffle, bran tub, and quizzes and all proceeds from the day went towards Sue's Asthma Charity.

The day was a very relaxed one and thoroughly enjoyed by all those who took part. There was much laughter and friendship and we hope it was a day which Sue will keep as a memory of her time as Lockswood Ladies' Captain.

Thanks Sue we all had a lovely day!

The Annual Castle Cup Competition between Lockswood and Portchester, took place on Sunday 12th July.  It was Lockswood's turn to host the event this year. Portchester won the cup at home last year, so Lockswood were hoping to win it back.  Unfortunately, after very close competition Portchester retained the trophy for another year.

Many thanks to all those players who took part and a special thanks to the Ladies in the kitchen for providing lunch on the day.

On Saturday 2nd July , Maxeen Fletcher, Jackie Barnes and Janet Haynes played their first S&DWBA Triples match .  It was away to Sylvia Mould and her team from Hyde Abbey.

Lockswood girls secured the win by sixteen shots to thirteen.

Congratulations ladies!

The annual Match Maker Competition took place last Sunday at Portchester between four clubs from the Gosport and Fareham League.  The competition consists of teams of Mixed Pairs, Mixed Triples and Mixed Fours.

Lockswood's winning team in the pairs were, Trevor Turner and Jean Bury.

We had a winning team in the Triples who were Stewart McCabe, Gill Grindey and Ann Bryant and in

the Mixed Fours one of the Lockswood teams drew and two of them won.

The day went very well and the final results were as follows :-

Portchester. 14 points and the overall winners of the trophy.

Fareham.      11 points and second place.

Lockswood.   8 points in third place

                                           Crofton.           3 points.

Well done to all those taking part and representing Lockswood.

The Championship -  over the last month The Championship Team have begun to put more points together and are currently in sixth place above Winchester City and B.T.C.

The Combination - are currently fifth, above Hedge End A and Old Green A, with four games left to play.

The Combination Triples - are having another good season, as they did last year, and are currently top of the league table 2.5 points clear of Hedge End C, with five games left. fingers crossed for a top place finish and a trophy for the cabinet! ( No pressure!)

Rinks League - the ladies in the rinks team are having a difficult time this year and at the half way stage are struggling to get results. However, they have won two of their last three matches and hopefully, they will continue to move up the table in the second half of the season.

Triples League - in the first year of playing in the Triples League, they are currently doing very well. Lockswood are tied in second place with Southampton Old  Green on eleven points behind the leaders Old Netley with twelve points.  There is the second half of the season left, to continue as they have been, with the possibility to get the top position and another trophy? ( Again, no pressure!)

Division One - although at times struggling for playersThe Red and Golds have had some favourable results.

At the time of writing the Reds are currently sixth, just two points behind the Golds who are in fifth with fifty four points.

Division Two - similarly, the Greens have had problems fielding a team and are also in sixth place , two places above Lee jacks and Gosport Amber.

MIXED TOP CLUB - After winning their Preliminary Round at home to Banister Park on the 12th June, Lockswood then went on to play the first round match at home against Andover on the 26th June. This was a very close match and in the last game to complete their game Lockswood were 17 - 14 up going into the last end but, unfortunately, Lockswood dropped five shots on the last end and the score was 19 - 17 to Andover.  This meant that we lost overall by three rinks to two!  That's bowls!!

A very well done, to all league players and competitors taking part in representing our club and good luck in the ongoing matches for July!
