Bembridge March 2025

Lockswood took 19 bowlers and 4 spectators to Bembridge, Isle of Wight for the Warners Open Fours Competition running from 17th to 21st march.   They were up against 10 teams from Portchester, 4 teams from Sevenoaks and 3 independent teams.  It was noted that one of the independent teams was a group from Guildford who had won several times before.

The weather was kind to us, and it was possible to explore other parts of the island as well as enjoy the facilities at Warners.  John Beaumont, Ron Collins and Malcolm Barton entered one of the quizzes which they won.

In the Bowls Hall Tuesday and Wednesday were taken up with the preliminary heats which eliminated 4 of the 5 Lockswood teams as they won only 2 of their 4 games.  Joan and Malcolm Barton with John and Jean Beaumont went through to the quarter finals having won 3 games.  Portchester with their 10 teams had several teams through and it was Portchester versus Lockswood in the quarter final.  Lockswood played well and were through to the semi-final.  Another match against another Portchester team.

Pressure was on Lockswood now.  Malcolm was playing in pain.  Just before the trip he fell at home and had a suspected cracked rib.  As he could not bend, he had borrowed a mechanical bowling arm from John Lillywhite and had only practised with it in his hallway before coming to the Island.  He was managing it well though and it was a tight match against Portchester.  7 shots each at the completion of the 7 ends forced an extra end to decide the match.  When Portchester took the jack to the edge of the rink it looked like it was all over.  Joan playing skip called for a weighted shot along the tight side of the rink to take the jack.  Macolm responded with his borrowed arm, the jack went in the ditch and Lockswood were through to the Final match. The team and the watchers went wild.

The Final on Thursday afternoon was against the Guildford team and although Lockswood tried hard the favourites took the game 13 – 5.  Each of the Lockswood team were presented with framed Finalists Certificates to take home.

The food was good although some thought the service could have been faster, Warners seemed to be suffering from a shortage of staff compared to previous years.

Overall it was a good trip away and Lockswood look forward to returning in October.

New Years Day 2025 Fun & Games

New Years Day's planned Bowling was abandoned due to a howling wind and a torrential downpour that flooded the rinks. "Admiral" White and Roger had contingency plans in place and we were treated to games, mulled wine and a sausage roll over the next couple of hours. We started with shuffleboard with everyone taking part and Chris Prince winning with a score of 30 points. A 1990's quiz then followed with 12 questions on the 90's decade which most of us struggled to remember! This was won narrowly by team 4 (Chris, Mike, Janet and Roger) after a final twisted question by Rob White, who was accused of having a warped mind by Vi Oliver! The final game was a spider conducted with envelopes and playing cards, the winner being Sue Coates holding the  winning Joker, complaints of "fix" being satisfied when she donated the winnings to her charity. A good afternoons fun thanks to Rob, Sylvia and Roger.

Help..volunteers to help run Jacks Cafe!

We desperately need volunteers to help run the Jacks Cafe on a Friday morning. With Maxeen incapacitated for the next few weeks, Dilys has time restrictions, so it is down to Joy and Neil at the moment. We started the cafe to bring people together somewhere warm over the winter months, to keep friendships going and enjoy a good chat over a coffee and toasted teacake.

It has certainly done just that and is a popular event in the week.

Please can you spare 2 - 3 hours on a Friday morning? There is a list in the red folder in the kitchen for anyone willing to help, please put your names down. If you can make a cake as well even better!

Call the ladies below if you want to know more about what it entails.

Thank you

Maxeen, Joy and Dilys

G&F GREENS CELEBRATE

For some years it has been traditional for the Lockswood Green team to hold an end-of-season dinner at a local pub.   This year the venue was the Bold Forester in Sarisbury Green where the group of 21 enjoyed good food amid a general feeling of elation at having achieved promotion to Division 3 for 2025.  The picture shows the players and their partners who are also invited.
